Carmel By The Sea, California known to the locals simply as Carmel, is situated on the Monterey Bay peninsula. Home to less than 4000 residents, one of its most renowned is Clint Eastwood who served as mayor in the late 1980s. In addition to pristine beaches and breathtaking scenery, Carmel is home to numerous art galleries and specialty shops stocked with everything from upscale clothing and home decorating items to handmade designer attire and accessories. Pet water bowls are located adjacent to the entrance to most shops.
One unique activity is taking the 17-mile drive. The toll road fee includes a map listing attractions along the route. This 2-hour journey, if no stops are made, passes by luxury hotels and golf courses among which is the famed Pebble Beach course and a very special Cyprus tree.
Another way to experience the coastline around Carmel is to take a harbor cruise aboard one of two 75 and 100 ft vessels for a whale watching adventure. Smaller glass bottom boats will afford the opportunity to see otters, sea lions and cormorants among other sea creatures.
For wine aficionados there is a new special walking pathway along the seashore with 9 tasting venues said to rival those in Napa Valley. More tasting venues are slated to open in the near future. A unique feature of the Monterey Bay Aquarium are whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling. The aquarium offers many interactive activities pertaining to marine life
Forest Theater is another fantastic experience to be enjoyed in what is billed as the oldest outdoor theater west of the Mississippi River. Visitors are invited to bring picnic goodies to be enjoyed while watching such outstanding performances as ‘Fiddler On The Roof.’ In addition to spectacularly staged shows, the Shakespeare Festival draws large crowds each year.
