HISTORY OF CARMEL

Carmel's real name is Carmel-by-the-Sea. Father Junipero Serra established Mission San Carlos  Borromeo on the north bank of the Rio Carmelo in 1770, and is buried there. Later writers and artists started inhabiting Carmel and placed it on the map. Robert Louis Stevenson lived in nearby Monterey and often visited Carmel. At the turn of the century, poets came because of cheap land and beautiful  inspiring scenery.

Carmel's greatest poet arrived in 1914; soon thereafter he  built the famous tower named for him, Robinson Jeffers.  By the1920s, vacation homes were being built everywhere. Soon,  the rich began to inhabit the community  rather than the Bohemian. No one can forget that Clint Eastwood was once mayor.  Carmel  CA is like a village from fantasy.

You will see lovely  architecture, European in feel, along with beautiful  Monterey Pine trees all around. There are unique  shops  shops  galore, beautiful  art galleries fabulous restaurants,  wonderful lodging,  and a feeling of "uniqueness"  that will captivate you immediately.

A visit to  Carmel Beach  along Scenic Drive will be an unforgettable experience, with white magical sandy beaches,  and  beautiful cypress trees reaching to the sky. There are paths to walk and jog on, and the road is great for bicycling.  In the village, the streets are alive with visitors on weekends.  Yet, Carmel is very peaceful during  the week.  In the summer,   the pace  livens up for weeks on end while visitors come to enjoy the cooling Classic Carmel fog and explore all that there is to find.

In the  months of June through August,  one can  truly escape the heat  of the inland valley.  Preserving a feeling of the past, one will find that there are  no street lights in residential Carmel. At  night, all one sees are the glowing lights in the quaint little  cottage windows, along with the twinkling stars in the sky.  A night romp with your  special someone will be ever so romantic. The local artists have always loved the sound of the ocean  late at night. One can hear it's beauty and  power, whispering.... " I have always been  there to inspire you..., and I will never leave you.
